August is Camden at full tilt. The harbor is thick with sails, the gardens are in full bloom, festivals roll in one after another down the coast, and the evenings stay warm and long. It is, without much argument, the best month to be here.
And your home base is a piece of the town’s history. Hartstone Inn fills the 1835 home of Captain Joseph C. Stetson — one of Camden’s most successful shipbuilders, who launched more than 70 vessels from this harbor and whose house outlasted the Great Fire of 1892. From that front door on Elm Street, you’re a short walk from the water and a short drive from nearly everything else. Here’s what’s on this August.
Plan ahead: August is the busiest month on the midcoast, and the big festival weekends — the Maine Lobster Festival and the Maine Boat & Home Show — fill area lodging first. If your dates are set, reserve your room (and your table at dinner) early.

Your base isn’t just a place to sleep between festivals — there’s plenty happening right here, all month.
• Settle into a piece of Camden history. You’re staying in a shipbuilder’s 1835 home that survived the fire which leveled much of downtown Camden — nearly two centuries of seafaring history, right down to the mansard roof. It’s a lovely thing to slow down and take in. (read the full story.)
• Dine by candlelight with Chef Tom White. The restaurant serves a seasonal three-course tasting Tuesday through Saturday, built on Maine’s coastline and the day’s catch, paired from a wine list that’s held the Wine Spectator Award of Excellence for over 15 years. Open to the public; reservations recommended on summer weekends.
• Catch Thursday live music. Every Thursday evening, live music fills the dining room — the easiest, loveliest night out in town, and you only have to walk downstairs.
• Ease into the afternoon. The Outdoor Cart Happy Hour runs Tuesday to Saturday with handcrafted cocktails, local beer, and wine on the lawn — and weekend mornings bring breakfast on the porch, with outdoor beignets on Saturdays.
• Bring your binoculars. As a Cornell Lab of Ornithology partner, the inn is a natural base for coastal birding — and late August is the front edge of fall migration along the midcoast.
Maine Lobster Festival — July 29 to August 2

The one that draws crowds from around the world. For five days, Rockland’s waterfront at Harbor Park fills with fresh lobster from the World’s Largest Lobster Cooker, plus the Great International Lobster Crate Race, the Big Parade, the Maine Sea Goddess coronation, live music, a road race, and a new dog show for 2026. It’s about fifteen minutes south — close enough to go for the afternoon and be back for a quieter dinner at the inn.
Union Fair & Maine Wild Blueberry Festival — August 5 to 9
A genuine Maine agricultural fair, about half an hour inland in Union, and the official home of the State of Maine Wild Blueberry Festival. Expect livestock and 4-H shows, a demolition derby, midway rides, live music, and blueberry everything — pie, muffins, and a famously good time for families.
Maine Boat & Home Show — August 7 to 9

The largest in-the-water boat show north of Newport, back at Rockland’s Harbor Park the second weekend of August. Tour classic wooden craft and new builds, meet Maine’s finest boatbuilders, furniture makers, and artisans, and browse coastal home goods and art, with live music and food along the waterfront. Kids under 12 get in free.
All month long in Camden
Beyond the big three, Camden keeps a full summer rhythm through August:
• Camden Art Walk — Thursday, August 20, 5–7 p.m. Held the third Thursday of the month, Bay View Street closes to traffic for live music, kids’ crafts, gallery openings, and food trucks.
• Movies in the Amphitheatre. On summer evenings, films screen the old-fashioned way at dusk in the Camden Amphitheatre beside the library — bring a blanket.
• Camden Farmers’ Market. Wednesday and Saturday mornings through the season — produce, cheese, flowers, and prepared food from midcoast growers and makers.
• Windjammer day sails. Camden is the windjammer capital of the world, and historic schooners run two-hour sails from the harbor daily — sunset trips book first.
• Summer concerts. Bay Chamber’s summer season and Rockport’s Happenings on the Harbor keep live music on the calendar all month.
Plan your August stay
August is the hardest month of the year to get a room on the midcoast — the festival weekends especially. A little planning goes a long way:
• Book the festival weekends first. Lobster Festival (Jul 29–Aug 2) and Boat Show (Aug 7–9) weekends go early. Lock your dates as soon as you can.
• Reserve dinner when you book your room. The dining room fills on summer weekends.
• Walk, don’t park. Staying downtown means strolling to the harbor and Main Street; save the car for Rockland and Union.
